Understanding Capital Credits

Unlike companies owned by outside investors, as a cooperative member, you get back a portion of the amount you paid for electric service. Each year, funds are allocated, or assigned, to members' accounts. Before they are refunded, however, the money is used to maintain, improve and ensure dependable service. If LREC was unable to use the members' equity or capital credits, it would have to borrow the funds. That would result in additional interest expense and increased rates. Since 1937, more than $17 million has been allocated to members. Unclaimed capital credits owed to Minnesota residents go into the Lake Region Electric Cooperative Scholarship Foundation. Capital credits owed to out-of-state former members are returned to the state.

Unclaimed Capital Credits

When capital credits for the years you were a member are refunded, you receive your share, whether or not you are still a member.  That is why it’s important for you to provide a forwarding address each time you move so you can still receive payment.  Lake Region Electric Cooperative has several members who have not cashed their capital credit check, or we no longer know where they are located.  Check out the list of unclaimed Capital Credits.  If you have any information about people on this list, please e-mail lrec@lrec.coop or call 866-899-3125.
