Operation Round Up helps kids stay safe

Mike Heikes

Mike Heikes understands the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet. A bike accident in 1982 left him with a brain injury. The injury changed his life, but it gave him a mission: to help prevent brain injuries in children “one helmet at a time.”

Mike founded Helmets for Kids, a non-profit organization that gives free bike helmets to kids in schools, at daycares, and at events such as bike rodeos throughout Ottertail County. In addition to grants and donations, all proceeds from sales of a book Mike has written about his experiences as a brain injury survivor go to the Helmets for Kids Foundation. About 10,000 kids have received free helmets so far.

Helmets for Kids received a $500 donation from Operation Round Up. You can help organizations like Helmets for Kids by donating to Operation Round Up. Just check the box on your statement or call customer service at 800.552.7658. You donate only pennies a month. The average donation is about $6 a year.
