Smart Thermostat Pilot Program

In June 2025, LREC introduced Own Your Power — a pilot program using smart thermostat devices already installed in members’ homes to work in coordination with and take advantage of our existing load control programs.

Together with our wholesale power provider, Great River Energy (GRE), LREC works with members to monitor and adjust energy used to heat/cool their homes during peak times when demand is at its highest.

Own Your Power

How does it work?
Through the smart thermostat device, LREC will automatically pre-cool or warm the home 2-4° F before the peak period, then re-adjusted to 3-4° from the member’s typical set point for 4 hours during peak.

What savings can I expect?
Members joining the program receive an initial, one-time $25 bill credit upon joining, then $25 for each participation season — heating AND cooling.

Additionally, we when we save, you save.
By working with LREC to proactively adjust your usage when demand is highest, the cooperative is able to avoid costs that would have been associated with generating more energy — which allows us to maintain a lower rate for our members.

What smart thermostats are compatible?
The current pilot is limited to Honeywell Ecobee and Google Nest smart thermostats.

What kind of commitment is required?
While member’s can choose to opt-out of participation at any time, for LREC to be able to fully evaluate the value of smart device programs and their relationship with load control programs, the current pilot will run for 18 months through November 2026.
